چکیده

We investigate the possibility of interference effects induced by a macroscopic quantum-mechanical superposition of almost orthogonal coherent states a Schrödinger cat state in a resonant microcavity. Despite the fact that a single atom, used as a probe of the cat state, on the average only change the mean number of photons by one unit, we show that this single atom can change the system drastically. Interference between the initial and almost orthogonal macroscopic quantum states of the radiation field can now take place. Dissipation under current experimental conditions is taken into account and it is found that this does not necessarily change the interference effects dramatically. Emil address: [email protected]. Macroscopic resonant tunneling of magnetic flux

We have developed a quantitative theory of resonant tunneling of magnetic flux between discrete macroscopically distinct quantum states in superconducting quantum interference device systems. The theory is based on the standard density-matrix approach. Its elements include the discussion of the two different relaxation mechanisms that exist for the double-well potential, and description of the ...

Interference effects in second-harmonic generation within an optical cavity

An experiment is described that investigates certain interference effects for second-harmonic generation within a resonant cavity. By employing a noncollinear geometry, the phases of two fundamental beams from a frequencystabilized dye laser can be controlled unrestricted by the boundary conditions imposed in an optical cavity containing a KDP crystal and resonant at the second harmonic. The fu...

Atomic absorbers for controlling pulse propagation in resonators.

We consider pulse propagation through a Fabry-Perot cavity with silver mirrors that contain macroscopic samples of resonant absorbers. We show that the pulse velocity can be tuned from subluminal to superluminal in a strongly coupled atom-cavity system. We delineate the effects of the interplay of cavity and absorbers. We demonstrate the saturation effects of pulse advancement with increasing m...

Photoelectron imaging of modal interference in plasmonic whispering gallery cavities.

We use three-photon photoemission electron microscopy (PEEM) to investigate the interference of coherently excited dipolar and quadrupolar resonant modes of plasmonic whispering gallery resonators formed by circular grooves patterned into a flat Au surface. Optical scattering and cathodoluminescence spectroscopy are used to characterize the cavity resonance spectra for a wide range of cavity ra...

Control of non-Markovian decay and decoherence by measurements and interference.

Novel methods are discussed for the state control of atoms coupled to multi-mode reservoirs with non-Markovian spectra: 1) Excitation decay control : we point out that the quantum Zeno effect, i.e., inhibition of spontaneous decay by frequent measurements, is observable in open cavities and waveguides using a sequence of evolution- interrupting pulses or randomly-modulated CW fields. 2) Locatio...
